Similar to other public service positions, a Board member can be "on-duty" 24 hours per day, seven days per week. When there is a concern impacting a member of the Association, it is possible to be telephoned, faxed, or approached at any time or at any place. However, in general the time commitment will be as follows:
- Monthly Board meetings: Typically the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Some meetings will last longer.
- Committee meetings: Approximately one meeting per month per committee, generally lasting two hours.
- Ad hoc committee meetings: May happen several times per year and involve 3 to 4 meetings lasting approximately 2 hours per each meeting.
- Board orientation and retreats: One orientation in early May and possibly two retreats, September and June. Total of 9 to 12 hours.
- Accessible to the public: Association members may engage you spontaneously at a school event or social event to discuss school matters. The amount of time this requires is hard to determine.
- Preparation for Board and committee meetings: In order for a Board to use its time effectively, it is important for Board members to be prepared for the various meetings.
